Fuel Pump may Fail and cause Stall

A stall can increase the risk of a crash.

 

Summary

Maserati North America, Inc. (Maserati) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Quattroporte GTS vehicles equipped with a V8 3.8 liter engine. A resistor in the low pressure fuel pump resistor may fail, causing a loss of engine power or a stall.

 

Remedy

Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump resistor cable assembly, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 13, 2017. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-510-2369. Maserati’s number for this recall is 359.

Statement

Auburn Hills, MI. – Maserati North America, Inc. and Maserati Canada, Inc. will recall 445 units of the Quattroporte GTS, Model Years 2015, 2016 and 2017 in North America.

This action has been proactively taken to replace the Fuel Pump Power Delivery Resistor.

Maserati North America, Inc. and Maserati CA, Inc. are unaware of any related accidents or injuries.

The repair performed will be the replacement of a new fuel pump power delivery resistor with improved capabilities.

Affected customers will be notified by Maserati North America, Inc. and Maserati Canada, Inc., via first class mail.  Customers can also use the VIN recall lookup feature in Maserati’s website under Tools and Services:

MASERATI SAFETY RECALL BULLETIN

 

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Maserati dealers must ensure recalls are completed after having been notified by Maserati North America, Inc. (MNA) that a safety-related defect or noncompliance exists in any motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment in the dealer’s possession at the time of notification.  In MNA’s case, this notification would typically be made by the issuance of a recall notification in the form of a Technical Bulletin. 

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended (or in the case of Canadian vehicles, Motor Vehicle Safety Act S.C. 1993, as amended), if a recall campaign is announced by MNA, dealers must ensure that all recalls on new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are completed BEFORE delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers with an open recall. 

The Safety Act also prohibits dealers from selling or leasing the motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment, unless and until the open recall has been completed BEFORE delivery. 

Under the terms of the Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program, CPO vehicles with an open recall may not be sold or delivered to the consumer. 

Finally, MNA dealers should not sell or use parts that have been recalled by MNA.  Please follow the specific instructions provided by MNA on the return or disposition of the parts.

 

Description of Vehicle Safety Recall 359

Maserati S.p.A. and MNA have determined that the above described vehicles were manufactured with a low pressure fuel pump resistor that could potentially fail when the operative current reaches the maximum allowed by the resistor; in that case the resistor failure comes as a result of cycle time and temperature fatigue. If the resistor fails, the low pressure pump will stop working due to an open circuit (resistor failure) and without the fuel pump working, the engine will lose power and eventually stall.

This repair procedure will be performed free of charge to the customer.

 

NOTE: Be sure to have the customer supply the radio security code because the battery will be disconnected from the vehicle.

Vehicle Remedy Information

1. Check that the vehicle is included in this Recall Campaign, and that the repair has not been previously performed.
2. Replace the low pressure fuel pump resister harness as shown below and in section 8.60.080 of the Workshop Manual.
3. The recall procedure is now complete.

 

Parts Needed For The Recall

For this Recall Campaign the low pressure fuel pump resistor harness, part number: 670104011 has to be ordered from the Maserati Parts Dept.

 

OPERATING PROCEDURES

1. Disconnect the battery.

NOTE: Before disconnecting the battery, lower the front and rear door windows a few centimeters then set the “KIN” to the “OFF” position.

2. Remove the R/S trunk liner.
   1. Lift the trunk seal as shown in Fig.1.
   2. Remove the trunk light as shown in Fig.2 then disconnect the wires.

3. Remove the button clip and loosen the two retaining nuts of the seatback. (Fig.3)

4. Remove the 3 button clips on the right side trunk liner. (Fig.4)
5. Disconnect the wire connector from the 12 V power socket. (Fig.5)

6. Remove the R/S trunk liner. (Fig.6)
7. Using a suitable tool, unfasten the connector retaining clip. (Fig.7)

8. Press the locking tab, then disconnect the resistor connector. (Fig.8)
9. Remove the 2 fastening nuts (1) that secure the resistor assembly. (Fig.9)

10. Install the new resistor assembly part number: 670104011(Fig.10) by following the removal instructions in reverse order.
11. When re-installing the seatback retaining nuts, torque them to 55 Nm. (Fig.11)

12. After reconnecting the battery;
    • With the “KIN” in the “ON” position, wait at least 15 seconds before pressing the start button to start the engine.
    • Using the MDEVO, perform a complete vehicle scan and delete any errors and DTC’s.
    • If present, verify the correct operation of the trunk lid and sunshades. If necessary perform the calibration procedures.
    • Verify the correct functioning of the Maserati Touch Control (MTC). If necessary insert the PIN code.
